Coilovers Explained – Upgrading Your Suspension the Right Way

Ever wondered how your car’s suspension system works? It’s all to do with coilovers and shock absorption. But what are coilovers, we hear you ask? We’re here to give you the lowdown at ProSpeed Racing – and tell you how you can use these components to upgrade your system and improve your vehicle’s overall performance.

What are Coilovers, and How Do They Work?

Coilovers are made with a spring wrapped around a shock or damper, along with threaded sleeves, bushing, bump stops and hardware like nuts and washers. Whenever you hit a bump in the road, the spring will compress, then release again once the road is flat, helping to give you a much smoother ride.

These parts offer a range of benefits over traditional shocks and struts by adjusting your vehicle’s ride height for better control, handling and comfort. They do this by lowering your car’s centre of gravity while making sure the chassis doesn’t bottom out.

They also support your wheels, and reduce the amount of weight transfer and body roll whenever your car turns around corners or changes direction.

How These Improve Your Car’s Suspension

Your car’s factory suspension system is designed to give you a much smoother ride by managing the friction between your tyres and the road. Getting your suspension right can be a tricky balance to strike that takes all kinds of variables into account.

A standard system will improve your level of handling to a certain degree, but it can only do so much. You can take this one step further by upgrading to coilovers for ultimate performance. Most standard systems keep the shock and spring separate – however, these components bring the two together. This helps to keep your tyres much closer to the road.

These parts also give you an edge in that they are fully adjustable, and allow you to adjust your ride height to whatever you choose based on the environment you’ll be driving in. For example, when you’re heading offroad or driving on uneven terrain you probably don’t want to be too close to the ground, as this can damage the underside of your chassis – so being able to adjust the height accordingly is a real advantage. Meanwhile, staying closer to the road is fine when you’re simply cruising down the street.

Whichever way you go, upgrading with these parts will open up a whole new realm of versatility and performance.
