What is a sway bar?
At its simplest, a sway bar is a metal accessory that attaches to vehicles, designed as a torsion spring that effectively reacts to twisting movement. Sway bars join the wheels, steering system, spring shocks, rubber bushings, linkages and joints to form a comprehensive vehicle suspension system.
When vehicles perform turns, sway bars level the components and overall vehicle, preventing the sway that comes with sharp turns. They help the vehicle handle corners much easier and allow coaches or large vehicles to manage turns at an efficient pace. Why are sway bars important?
Provides stable driving and levels-out components
As sway bars reduce the tilt and lean of a vehicle’s body, there are multiple reasons why they’re important. When vehicles turn corners or drive along an incline, the vehicle’s force is applied to the outside of the opposite side that the car is turning. With no intervention, the outside wheel lifts in reaction to this force.
Sway bars level out components and align the height of the tyres, which means the vehicle remains stabilised throughout the turn. They also help prevent parts from becoming misaligned and causing more severe and expensive problems.

Handling turns more effectively and maintaining height levels of components means that vehicles are much less likely to roll during turns. For tall vehicles and those with a high centre of gravity, they provide a grounding effect that makes driving a lot safer while protecting the vehicle.
Sway bars also offer more effective grip on the road because wheels are kept level, so without the capacity to lift, they produce better traction and control.
