Understanding ignition coil packs
Getting the most out of your vehicle begins right from the ignition process. That is where coil packs come into play, delivering the best possible spark for optimal performance.
Your ignition coils are electronically controlled, and will build up the required energy before releasing it to your spark plugs to start the combustion process. This offers many benefits over a distributor ignition system as there are fewer moving parts, and they fire less than a distributor.
The coil will draw power from your battery then boost it, delivering a hotter spark that will ignite your fuel and air mixture more efficiently. This results in better combustion and increased horsepower.
How do coil packs work?
These are made from thin copper wires that have been rolled around thousands of times and housed in a small metal canister. They may be small, but they pack a lot of power, taking the 12-volt charge from your battery and amplifying it up to 45,000 volts – which are then supplied to your engine's spark plugs.
It is better to install these coils directly over the spark plugs. This way you avoid the use of long high-voltage cables that are bulky, can become damaged and are subject to radio frequency interference.
What happens when it deteriorates?
When your coil begins to deteriorate, it will deliver less voltage to the spark plug, resulting in a weaker fire. This will often mean misfiring, which puts pressure on the crankshaft, and you will have noticeably reduced performance as you won’t have the optimised heat and air-flow ratio.
It is not advisable to continue driving if you notice any of these symptoms, as it can cause damage to major components in your engine. In most instances, you will lose a cylinder, which means that your car will be underpowered and unbalanced, therefore not safe. It is advisable to have a replacement on hand in case of emergency.
