The external wastegate is designed to be mounted in line with the exhaust pipe and act as an electronically controlled bypass valve for the air being forced out of the turbocharger's turbine housing. This reduces boost pressure by allowing excess exhaust gas to escape directly into the atmosphere rather than back into the engine's intake manifold, which can cause serious damage if left unchecked.
The purpose of a wastegate is to prevent over boosting a turbocharged engine (which may result in catastrophic failure). Excess pressure from excessive boost causes gases trapped inside your motor to expand rapidly, like when you blow up a balloon quickly or shake up a carbonated soft drink bottle vigorously. This rapid expansion creates heat that will eventually destroy your motor through overheating and detonation (also known as knocking) unless it can be released safely outside of your engine bay.
