How To Pick The Right Turbocharger

Define Your Goals:

Determine what you want to achieve with the turbocharger. Are you looking for more power, faster acceleration, better fuel efficiency, or a combination of these factors?

Consider Your Vehicle:

Take into account your vehicle's make and model, engine size, and existing modifications. The compatibility of the turbocharger with your engine is essential. Whilst you can bolt on parts if your running stock engine internals you could be asking for trouble, especially if you’re looking to turn the boost up high. It is always recommended you seek to upgrade your engine internals before slapping on parts.

If you are turning a NA engine build into a turbo this is more important to follow the above.

Know Your Budget:

Turbochargers come in a wide range of prices, and the cost can vary significantly depending on the brand and features. Set a budget for your turbocharger purchase. A good way to look at this is to determine what wastegate or blow off valve you run, for example Turbosmart & GFB offer a great range of these products. One of them might be financially or technically better for your specific kit or build.

Research:

Research various turbocharger options and manufacturers. Look for reviews, forums, and feedback from people who have installed similar turbos in their vehicles. On Pro Speed Racing we try our absolute best to provide you with all the necessary specs, information and guides to ensure you’re doing the right thing. Often best to either call a workshop or give us a call! 02 4340 4463. Check out all the Turbo’s we offer here and filter through.

To help give you an idea of what you need to turbo a car, consider all of these parts. Pressure regulators, intercooler, wastegate, blow off valve, boost controllerexhaust manifold, downpipe, heat blankets/ wrapping, gauges, fittings and lines, piping

Determine Your Power Goals:

Calculate the power output you desire and the desired boost pressure. This will help you narrow down the options and choose a turbocharger that can provide the right amount of boost for your goals. You have no doubt heard or seen GFB electronic boost controllers. In practice the ability to change your boost pressure is awesome! Just remember to follow the instructions and understand what your daily running psi is compared to when you’re giving it the beans!

Consider Spooling Characteristics:

The spooling characteristics of a turbocharger refer to how quickly it generates boost. Consider whether you want a turbo that spools up quickly for immediate low-end power or one that provides a gradual increase in power over a broader RPM range. This follow beautifully into the next segment.

Choose the Right Turbo Size:

Turbochargers come in different sizes, and selecting the right size is crucial. A smaller turbo may spool quickly but might not support high-end power, while a larger turbo can provide more top-end power but may lag at low RPMs. You may want a gigantic Garrett Turbo, and rightly so we understand why but perhaps consider the style of driving you’re doing. Coming out of tight corners or consistently doing windy tracks may negate the need for high end power. Perhaps even a smaller twin turbo system might be better for you…

Assess Compressor and Turbine Housing:

Consider the size and design of the compressor and turbine housing. This affects how efficiently the turbocharger can deliver air and exhaust gases, impacting performance.

Check for Compatibility:

Ensure the chosen turbocharger is compatible with your vehicle's engine and exhaust system. You may need to modify other components to accommodate the new turbo. This is paramount and often why turbo’s come as kits. What we can say however is that Turbosmart and GFB do offer a variety of compatible parts with most turbo manufacturers such as Blouch, Garrett, HKS,

Consult with Experts:

If you're not confident in making the decision yourself, consult with automotive experts, mechanics, specialised turbocharger shops OR us at Pro Speed Racing! We can provide valuable insights and recommendations.

Quality and Reliability:

Consider Supporting Mods:

Keep in mind that a more significant increase in power may require additional modifications to your vehicle, such as upgraded fuel delivery systems, intercoolers, and engine management systems. Factor in these costs as well.

Installation:

Turbocharger installation should be done by a skilled mechanic or shop with experience in turbocharging. Proper installation is critical to avoid potential issues.
Remember that selecting the right turbocharger is a complex process, and it's important to balance your goals with your vehicle's capabilities and limitations. If you're unsure, seeking professional advice can help you make an informed decision.
