A top mount intercooler (TMIC) is an integral part of your vehicle’s induction system, acting as a cold air intake device in turbocharged or supercharged engines. It works by cooling the compressed air that’s produced by the turbocharger – therefore reducing the temperature in your engine.
To get the most performance out of your vehicle, it’s important to reduce the temperature of the air in your motor – as it can be quite hot when compressed by the turbocharger. When this happens, there’s not as much oxygen available – and you need the presence of oxygen in order to burn fuel, improve combuSTion and keep your air-fuel ratio at a safe level.

Top or Front Mount – Which is Best?
You might be wondering what the difference is between a top and front mount intercooler. We’re here to break down the difference for you.
TMIC systems provide a range of advantages over front-based alternatives. For starters, they’re ideal for installations where space at the front of the engine bay is tight, and they’re easy to install. When positioned above your engine, your TMIC is safely out of the way and protected from any debris, rocks or mud that may flick up when you’re driving offroad. In this position, it also won’t obstruct airflow to the radiators and air conditioning at the front of the car.
As the TMIC is fitted near your vehicle’s intake system, you won’t need as much pipework to connect it, which means less chance of leaks and improved throttle response. It also means your turbocharger is less prone to lag, as the air produced doesn’t need to travel as far.
