The return of the legendary Ford Bronco in 2021 was a dream come true for many long-time enthusiasts. The Bronco is a very capable off-roader, especially in the new Raptor trim. While the Bronco Raptor comes equipped with a robust factory transmission oil cooler system, the standard 2.7L V6 model lacks this essential upgrade. That's where CSF stepped in to help.
Introducing the CSF Bronco 2.7L External Transmission Oil Cooler Kit. This complete bolt-on kit was designed to provide the kind of protection serious off-roaders need. Whether you're scaling dunes, crawling rocks, or just exploring the backcountry, overheating your transmission can put a real damper on your adventure. CSF's new system offers a major performance boost over the factory liquid-to-liquid cooler and improves upon the design of the factory Bronco Raptor system.
The OE Transmission Oil Cooler from Ford is a small, water-to-oil stack cooler. While adequate for daily driving, it can easily become overwhelmed when these rigs are pushed to their limits. It's not just high-horsepower builds or hardcore off-roaders who need better cooling. Many overlanders, campers, and weekend adventurers add significant weight and drag to their Broncos. Roof-mounted tents, spare tires, fuel cans, and oversized tires all increase the load on both the engine and transmission. With CSF's kit, your 2.7L Bronco gains the cooling capacity it should have had from the factory, providing crucial protection and preserving performance.
The CSF system was built around a high-performance transmission oil cooler built with CSF's Micro Channel Technology. The core features a super-high-pressure 26mm 12-channel microtube design that maximizes oil flow and surface area contact. Constructed of 11 rows of cooling tubes and paired with 12 rows of 8mm multi-louvered high-performance fins, it delivers outstanding heat transfer efficiency. A CNC billet-machined thermostatic plate replaces the factory stack cooler which reroutes transmission fluid to the new cooler mounted in front of the radiator. Motorsport-grade lines and patented quick-release fittings by DYME PSI ensure a clean, fast, and straight-forward installation.
The CSF engineering team conducted real world testing on the 2.7L Bronco. Testing was performed in the California desert on a warm day with temperatures hitting a high of 97 degrees F (36 degrees C). @acfab_oscar was kind enough to lend CSF his rig to validate the performance of the new Transmission Oil Cooler Kit under real world conditions both on and off-road. Many Bronco owners report transmission temps in the 200-215 degrees F (93-102 degrees C) range under moderate load. Some owners have seen temperatures as high as 280 degrees F (138 degrees C) in extreme conditions.
Test data showed a peak transmission oil temperature of just 180 degrees F (82 degrees C). This number was recorded during stop-and-go traffic immediately following the off-road test with an ambient temperature of 93 degrees F (34 degrees C). Over the course of testing, the transmission saw a ΔT of only 26 degrees F (13.4 degrees C). The data proves both a substantial reduction in transmission temperatures and vast increase in cooling capacity.
Some customers might wonder why CSF elected to replace the OE Cooler instead of just looping the cooler off of it like the Bronco Raptor system. There are two important reasons for this:
The factory system does not include a thermostat. This makes it harder for the transmission to reach operating temp quickly, especially on cooler days. CSF integrated a thermostat into the billet plate.
The factory stack style oil cooler can cause some ground clearance issues. Because of its location, many owners have damaged their cooler off-road. Replacing the cooler with the CSF billet-machined plate creates a much more robust system overall.
CSF partnered with DYME PSI for their exceptional quality and innovative quick-release hose and fitting solutions. The DYME Pro/Spec Quick Release Fittings offer race-proven performance with the convenience of tool-free clamshell removal and capable of withstanding up to 10,000 PSI. Quick Release fittings make the installation of the CSF kit much faster than traditional threaded fittings. In addition, they make maintenance like fluid changes much less of a headache. The hoses are a Superstrasse CPE lined stainless steel braided rubber hose for maximum flexibility, flow, and chemical resistance. The lines are ideal for motorsports use and more than capable of handling the rigors of off-roading.
