Description
The Toyota GR86 made a strong impression upon its debut, replacing the first-generation GT86 while incorporating the renowned Toyota GR performance package. Powered by a 2.4L flat-four boxer engine, the GR86 is not only popular on the streets but has also become a regular on race tracks worldwide. After the success of our previous Ford RS, Toyota GR, and Honda Type R direct-fit oil cooler kits, we knew we had to get one in the workshop. Our goal was simple; to design and manufacture user-friendly, easy-to-install kits that require either no, or very little modifications.
The front end of the GR86 was removed to give our development team full access to the new external oil cooler mounting position and to plan the routing for the braided hoses. This also allowed for the design and fabrication of any custom bracketry needed for a precise fit. To ensure a perfect fitment, we 3D laser scanned the front of the engine bay and ancillaries. Once an oil cooler bracket was designed using the threaded ports located on the factory bumper support, we tested a 3D-printed prototype and then manufactured the final aluminium version. All HEL direct-fitting oil cooler brackets are laser cut, precision folded, and powdercoated in Black to result in a stealthy finish. Promoting direct airflow, the Setrab oil cooler was securely mounted behind the main lower bumper grill, proving as the most suitable location for effective cooling and performance.
Every HEL oil cooler kit features a high-quality, reliable oil cooler manufactured by Setrab in Sweden. We have been using Setrab coolers for 10+ years, and have never had any issues with the performance or quality. Having an oil cooler fail or even burst is not something you want to experience, especially in demanding conditions and that is something we have never seen with Setrab's build quality. In the past, we've even had reports of front-end collisions and the Setrab oil cooler was the only component that still worked!
Delivered with pre-assembled braided hoses and Aluminium fittings, our comprehensive kit has everything required for a straightforward installation. Using AN8 high-flow performance hose to deliver and return oil from the external oil cooler, this kit also includes a bespoke oil filter take-off plate, which is equipped with a built-in thermostat. The thermostat ensures that your engine oil flows to the external oil cooler only when the oil reaches the desired temperature (92°C / 198°F).
Around 10% of the engine oil circulates through the oil cooler at any given time, this ensures a continuous flow that prevents air pockets and safeguards against thermal shock to the system. The surplus oil is then channelled back to the engine through the internal bypass system, promoting faster warm-up, providing added safeguarding in cold weather conditions, and eliminates the risk of overcooling.
