Ditch your VB WRX’s leaky factory turbo inlet and upgrade to the Overtake Aluminium Turbo Inlet. Designed for 2022 and newer Subaru WRX models, this high-strength aluminium upgrade improves airflow and addresses two major flaws in the factory inlet, resulting in lower intake air temperatures and improved boost response.

The factory inlet is aluminium. How is OVERTAKE’s different?

Modern vehicles must prevent fuel vapours from escaping the fuel tank, instead routing them to the engine to be burned. When the engine is off, the system is sealed, which makes a proper seal critical. At idle and under vacuum conditions, a purge solenoid periodically opens and draws vapours into the intake manifold.

Under light boost conditions, manifold pressure is too high to draw vapours directly, so the system instead routes them to the turbo inlet. The pressure drop created by airflow through the intake generates enough suction to move the vapours. However, this design has a flaw. The EVAP sensor is located far from the inlet, with a long hose between them, which can lead to weak sensor readings.

To address this, Subaru introduced a temporary solution by drilling a 4 mm hole into the turbo compressor housing to feed a venturi-style ejector. This intentional boost leak increases airflow through a small channel in the factory inlet, generating an artificial vacuum so the sensor detects the expected pressure drop while vapours continue entering the turbo.

At wide-open throttle, the purge solenoid closes to trap vapours in the tank, but the ejector continues leaking boost into the turbo inlet. This forces the turbocharger to spin faster to maintain target boost, increasing charge temperatures, reducing intercooler efficiency, and limiting top-end airflow and boost potential.

To prevent the venturi from freezing and disabling the EVAP system, Subaru circulates engine coolant beneath the turbo inlet. This heats the factory inlet to approximately 93 degrees Celsius, which in turn heats the air entering the turbocharger and reduces performance potential.

The OVERTAKE Turbo Inlet takes a different approach by using the engine’s vacuum pump as a direct and consistent vacuum source, positioned closer to the sensor. Because this pump is normally used only for power braking, an inline restrictor pill is included to limit vacuum levels and ensure braking performance remains unaffected.

This design preserves proper fuel vapour management without relying on an intentional boost leak. By eliminating the ejector orifice, the coolant loop through the inlet can be bypassed, allowing cooler, denser intake air to reach the compressor for improved performance.

Additionally, the factory Subaru inlet contains internal pockets designed to reduce induction noise and increase surface area for inlet warming. These pockets disrupt airflow entering the turbocharger. The OVERTAKE inlet removes these restrictions, providing a smooth airflow path and increased intake air velocity.
