Ever since the launch of Civic Type R FK8, wSpoon have been focusing on the turbocharged K20C engine potential. ECU analysis has been conducted rigourously, with settings changed multiple times with the goal of further improving engine performance.
Just by safely optimising the ECU settings for boost, ignition timing and fuel, an improvement of 29kw is achievable. The further need to improve the low to mid-range torque and high rpm output has led Spoon to developing this high-capacity turbocharger.
This upgrade uses the latest, highly efficient MHI turbocharger, who provide the factory unit for the FK8 Type R. This means a truly bolt-on application due to using the same exhaust and compressor housing dimensions.
The latest CFD analysis technology helped with optimising the internals of the unit. By adjusting the compressor and turbine blade profiles, along with an increase in diameter, Spoon were able to achieve a higher power output without sacrificing the low to mid-range torque.
The shape of the compressor and the number of blades has been optimised, providing a higher flow rate and higher boost levels. This is achieved by increasing the compressor wheel from a 58mm diameter to 65mm.
The blade shape and the number of turbine wheels has also been enhanced, from the OEM 47mm to 52mm. The suppressed moment of inertia and increased capacity reduces exhaust pressure and improves engine response.
