The differential is a mechanical device that provides a flexible division of drive between the wheels, allowing the car to corner. Load applied to the drive wheels during acceleration and wheel speed during cornering is always different from left to right wheel. Due to this, wheel spin can occur causing a loss of control and therefore acceleration performance.
The Spoon LSD uses a 1.5 way configuration to optimise straight-line and cornering traction. Initial torque has been pre-set by Spoon to 9-9.5kg when cold, which was found to provide the best performance in most driving applications. In high performance and race applications, the extra traction this LSD provides increases vehicle performance tremendously.
As a characteristic of mechanical LSD’s, there is a small amount of dragging of the internal gear during low speed cornering. Wheel chatter and noise from the LSD is normal in these conditions.
