In order to understand the potential of the world's fastest FF sports car, Spoon tested the stock Honda Civic Type R FL5 on the race track and the winding roads and of Japan. Right away, they noticed the aggressive suspension set up of the stock vehicle with very high roll rigidity potential. However, on the track, the roll initiated with a slight delay which prevented the driver to smoothly trace the intended corner line at entry. Meanwhile, the ride was a little too harsh for street driving, and thus Spoon's goal was clear: To develop progressive springs to improve performance driving in all conditions, allowing the driver to trace the ideal cornering line, yet deliver comfort on the street.
To improve sports driving performance, Spoon have increased the spring rate by 10% relative to stock. For better suppleness going over road gaps, they have introduces a higher rebound stroke. Installation of these springs will lower the car by approximately 20mm for lower center of gravity.
The Spoon development team have also worked hard to improve ride comfort. By increasing the coil and therefore extending the length of the spring, Spoon have lowered the required load to initiate the response of the spring. The response rate was fine tuned by implementing an irregular-pitched spring with a barrel-shaped cross section profile.
The lowered load requirement to initiate spring response improved ride comfort for street use, while the progressive spring rate delivers traction for higher speeds and spirited driving. The Spoon Sports Progressive Spring Set enhances the drivers ability to control and enjoy the true potential of the Honda Civic Type R FL5.
