What is a fuel injection system?

Fuel injecting systems are a part of combustion engines that deliver fuel to the engine chambers through direct or indirect injection. Both direct and indirect systems inject a precise volume of fuel at exactly the right time into the combustion chambers, calibrated for each engine’s capacity. Fuel injection systems can be used in both petrol and diesel engines and are now used in nearly all common cars on the roads.

Compared to traditional methods of fuel delivery, fuel injection systems are superior because of their controllability, delivering precise volumes at exact times, making them a much more efficient system. They result in less fuel wastage and emissions, causing less harm to the environment and making it cheaper for owners to drive their cars.

How does a fuel injection system work?

To provide a detailed perception of how a fuel injection system works, we first need to outline its main components, which include:

  • Fuel supply module: This module contains a collection of parts including the fuel filter and electric fuel pump which keeps the system at high pressure.
  • Intake air adjuster: This part measures and inputs the precise volume of air is intake required for the engine to work effectively.
  • Electronic control unit: The control unit and sensors allow the exact volume of fuel to be measured and injected into the intake air stream.
  • Fuel injectors: The fuel injectors are the piece of equipment that holds the process, mounted on a supply rail to deliver fuel efficiently. There is one injector per engine cylinder.

The process begins when the fuel supply modules deliver high-pressure fuel to the injector. The electronic control unit considers throttle position, air temperature, and the engine's speed, torque and exhaust data. This information is gathered by the sensor, to which the unit accumulates the precise volume of fuel needed. Air then arrives through the intake and enters the engine chambers and mixes with the fuel, enabling the optimal combustion pressure for the engine to work efficiently.

In indirect fuel injection, the fuel enters the intake manifold, where fuel and air mix in the channel that leads to the engine. Direct injection means the fuel only mixes with air inside the chamber. Direct injection is more efficient and offers better economy, power and reduced emissions.
